Hot destinations for 2011: four of the best

Four unconventional destinations to tempt holidaymakers in 2011, chosen by Francesca Syz.

Montenegro

While stunningly beautiful Montenegro has been popping up on ‘hot new destination’ lists for the past few years, the infrastructure for tourism, particularly at the higher end of the market, has been a bit slower in coming. The opening of the long-awaited Aman Sveti Stefan in April could change all that. The islet of Sveti Stefan is a 15th-century fortress-turned-fishing-village connected to Montenegro’s Adriatic Coast by an isthmus (right), whose population dwindled in the early 20th century. It was eventually turned into a five-star resort in 1960, but Sveti Stefan has now been given the Aman makeover and has 50 simple, stylish guest cottages and suites dotted all over the island. If you’re looking for something a bit more low-key and outdoorsy, head to the country’s dramatic Eastern Highlands, a land of mountains, lakes and canyons, to the Biogradska Gora national park. Hotel Lipka in Kolasin is an ideal base from which to go walking.
