Mehmet Durakovic and Jeff HopkinsThe Red Giants have roped in former star player Memhet Durakovic to chart their fortunes in the Super League.

The 48-year-old Durakovic was a key player in Selangor’s success in winning the Malaysia Cup for three consecutive seasons from 1995 to 1997.

FAS deputy president Datuk Abdul Mokhtar Ahmad said in a press release on Thursday that Durakovic had served Selangor with distinction.

“As a player, we believe the former Australian international had the ability to transmit his desire, enthusiasm and commitment to the team. We realise there is an urgent need to cultivate a new culture of winning. Ultimately, we desire to create a winning team, driven by homegrown talent. We believe Mehmet is the man to head the project.â€

Durakovic has been hired on a three-year term. He will head the team rebuilding process besides coaching the team in their bid to help Selangor rediscover their glory days.

Durakovic, who last coached at A-League’s Melbourne Victory, signed on the dotted line before Mokhtar and FAS secretary Rosman Ibrahim on Monday.

Selangor are desperate for success in the domestic competition after three fruitless seasons. Former Selangor coach Irfan Bakti left the state team midway through the Malaysia Cup this season. Irfan has been reported to have signed up with Felda United next season. Durakovic is expected to begin work on Nov 15.
