\"Fed<\/a>ULCINJ, MONTENEGRO: Armenia provided the shock of Day 2 at the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Europe\/Africa Zone Group III event when it defeated host and No. 2 seed Montenegro in Ulcinj.<\/p>\n

Armenia came into the tie following a 3-0 defeat to Greece yesterday, and its week looked to be heading from bad to worse when Montenegro\u2019s Kristina Samardzic defeated Lusine Chobanyan 61 64 in the opening rubber.<\/p>\n

Ani Amiraghyan, the Armenian No. 1, was forced to retire from her match yesterday but showed no signs of still being affected and defeated Tamara Bojanic 64 61 to force the tie into a deciding doubles rubber. Amiraghyan was back on court for the doubles, partnering Milena Avetisyan, and they defeated the Montenegrin duo of Bojanic and Nikoleta Bulatovic 61 62 to seal Armenia\u2019s victory.<\/p>\n

Caroline Wozniacki\u2019s Denmark is the No. 3 seed in the Zone Group and it got off to a perfect start with a 3-0 win over Algeria in Pool C. Karen Barbat gave Denmark an early lead in the tie with a 63 62 win over Amira Benaissa.<\/p>\n

Wozniacki, the world No. 5, was next up and had little difficulty in overcoming Ines Ibbou 62 61 to give Denmark an unassailable 2-0 lead. Every rubber counts at this stage of the week, however, and Denmark made sure it would take away all three when Emilie Francati and Mai Grace defeated Benaissa and Ibbou 60 60 in the doubles rubber.<\/p>\n

Top seed Lithuania began its quest for promotion with a convincing 3-0 win over Iceland. Akvile Parazinskaite set the tone for the tie with a convincing 60 61 win over Hera Brynjarsdottir in the opening rubber.<\/p>\n

Lina Stanciute then followed suit with a 61 60 win over Hjordis Rosa Gudmundsdottir to seal victory in the tie for Lithuania. There was to be no let-up for Iceland though as Parazinskaite and Stanciute\u00a0 teamed up to defeat Brynjarsdottir and Gudmundsdottir 60 60 in the doubles rubber.<\/p>\n

Fourth seed Moldova carried its good form from the opening day into Day 2. Competing in Pool D, the only pool to feature four teams, Moldova took on Macedonia, who had also won its first tie. Daniela Ciobanu was in blistering form in the opening rubber as she defeated Magdalena Stoilkovska 60 60 to give Moldova a 1-0 lead.<\/p>\n

Lina Gjorcheska responded by taking the second rubber for Macedonia, overcoming Anastasia Vdovenco 60 62 to force the tie to a deciding doubles rubber. The doubles was a hard-fought contest between Moldovan pair Julia Helbet and Alexandra Perper and Macedonia duo Gjorcheska and Stoilkovska, with the Moldovans persevering 76(1) 63 to secure a 2-1 and top spot in the pool.<\/p>\n

Namibia earned its first win of the week in the all-African clash with Mozambique. Kerstin Gressmann eased past Marieta De Lyubov Nhamitambo 60 62 in the opening rubber to give Namibia a 1-0 lead and its first rubber of the week.<\/p>\n

Namibian No. 1, Lesedi Sheya Jacobs, secured the tie for Namibia when she defeated Claudia Sumaia 61 61 in the second rubber. Jacobs then teamed up with Liza Elfrida Moolmann to defeat Nhamitambo and Sumaia 60 60 in the doubles, completing a 3-0 whitewash for Namibia.<\/p>\n
