Ulcinj is one of the oldest towns at the Montenegrin coast.
\n The old town is the southest city in Montenegro. Ulcinj center (Stari Grad) is surrounded with old walls and towers and it\u00b4s like an old castle over looking the sea. You will find in the old city local shops, caf\u00e9s, restaurants and galleries in small romantic streets.<\/a>
\n Arround the center of the old town Ulcinj was developed in the bay of the ” Little Beach “. With its natural charms, Ulcinj is perfect for tourism.<\/a>
\n Ulcinj is considered to be a much warmer place compared to other towns on the Montenegrin coast. With 270 sunny days per year Ulcinj is one of Montenegro\u00b4s travel hot spots during the summer, autumn and spring season and is the centre of Ulcinj municipality of Montenegro with a total population of 27,000.<\/a>
\n Ulcinj is a typical Mediterranean travel destination with old narrow streets, romantic bars and restaurants, small shops, antique monuments, churches, mosques and picturesque buildings.<\/a><\/p>\n

Climate and Vegetation<\/strong>\"Montenegro<\/a>
\n Ulcinj is like a sun resort. It is rich with subtropical Mediterranean and decorating plants like old olive trees, palm trees, agaves, cypresses, and mimosas.<\/a>
\n During the winter the temperature at Ulcinjska Rivijera (Ulcinj Riviera) is mostly between 8 – 15 C and during summer between 25 – 34 Celsius.<\/a>
\n The climate along Ulcinj is a typical Mediterranean one, with mild, rainy winters and hot and dry summers. Summer temperatures in July can rise up to 34\u00b0C to 36\u00b0C. 2700 hours of sunshine a year.<\/a>
\n Flora and fauna in Ulcinj are similar to all other coastal towns in Montenegro. In Ulcinj there are thousands of olive trees along the beaches, palm trees, oleanders, mimosas and wild and domestic pomegranates, figgs, oranges, mandarins, grapes and lemon trees. Rare examples of flowers and decorative trees are cultivated there.<\/a>
\n Ulcinj contains a large number of sandy and rocky beaches, offering their visitors privacy and pleasure. Talking about pleasure it is worth of mentioning “The Olive Love Tree”, growing in Ulcinj in over 80.000 trees. \"AdaAda Bojana<\/strong><\/a>
\n Some kilometers south from Ulcinj is a 13 kilometers long sandy beach which streaches till the mouth of the river Bojana , from where it continues 2.7 kilometers on Ada Bojana till the Montenegro-Albanian border.<\/a>
\n Ada Bojana is popular among foreign tourists from Western Europe for its peace and unique atmosphere.<\/a>
\n Ada Bojana, the splendid river island is dividing the delta of the ending river Buna into two forks and has a form of a triangular shape, and is also called triangle island. This beach exclusively reserved for nudists – also the biggest nddist colony in Montenegro.<\/a>
\n It is close to 3.0 km long in the direction of the water flow, 1.8 km wide, and 3.4 m high. Two of the sides are washed by the fresh water of the river, and the third part of the triangle is a sandy beach and kisses the adriatic sea.<\/a>
\n The right fork of Buna is bridged, connecting Ada with Great Beach. On the banks of this part of the river Buna were built wooden huts with strange fishing divaces-Kalimera, which make it look like an exotic area of the far east Ada, far away from the world, is a real oasis of peace and relaxation. Its absolute silence is distributed only by the chipping of rare birds and the breaking of waves. Its thick and lush vegetation makes it a special micro ecological world, the home of rare plants and rare animals.<\/a>

Pirates, Sailors and Traders<\/strong>\"Gallery<\/a>
\n Ulcinj is also well known for his famous sailors. During the last centuries the most developed industry in Ulqini was trade and maritime affairs. Sailors used to import different products from overseas which they would exchange for the goods they were in need of. Ulqini has a long and rich maritime and merchant tradition.<\/a>
\n The peak of seafaring was in 17th 18th and 19th centuries. Ulqini\u2019s own merchant marine traded between the large ports and trading centers of the Adriatic, Levant and Mediterranean. They exchanged and shipped to Venice, Istria and Trieste, wool to Genoa, tobacco into many Adriatic ports. Ulcinj geographical location is between:<\/a><\/p>\n

* Longitudes 19\u20198 and 19\u201923 east, and
\n* Latitudes 41\u201950 and 42\u20195 north. <\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

\"MiguelUlcinj has been for many centuries a pirate nest. In Mala Plaza bay very close to Ulcinj, the pirates in 17th an and 18th century celebrated their victories, preparing halvah stirring it with oars, dividing their loot.<\/a>
\n Miguel de Cervantes supposedly was held captive for five years. Legend says that he fellt in love with a woman who was the inspiration for Don Quixote’s lady love, Dulcinea.<\/a>
\n One square in Ulcinj down town is called the \u201cSlave Square\u201d because the pirates from Ulcinj were trading in the 17th and 18th century black slaves from different African countries.<\/a><\/p>\n

The beaches:
\nUlcinj is famous for its sandy beaches like:<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

\"UlcinjskaVelika Pla\u017ea (“Long Beach”)<\/strong>, which is a 13 km long and the longest sand beach on the Adriatic coast. The beach is covered with fine sand which contains large quantities of iodine and salt minerals and is known to have healing effects for curing rheumatism and skin diseases.<\/a>

\n The beach is located 4.5 km from the old town. It takes almost a 2.5 hour walk to discover the whole beach in one way. So make shure you get a lift back to the city by bus or taxi.\"plazha<\/a><\/p>\n

Mala <\/strong>Pla\u017ea<\/strong> -Little Beach:<\/strong><\/a>
\n At the very heart of the town the closest beach called ‘little beach’ is a 650m long swathe of sand. The Small Beach and its bay is situated between the points of Punta e Nuradinit (Punta Nuradinit) and Suka (Cap Ratislava).<\/a>
\n \"ValdanosValdanos Beach:<\/strong><\/a>
\n This Beach together with its background is a true olive reservation. It is covered with big pebbles as well as the sea bottom and in a mild semicircle it is pulled into the land.<\/a>
\n There is a tourist settlement of bungalows surrounded by olive trees, as well as a restaurant in its background.<\/a>
\n The beach is 400m long, and on its endings there are cliffs, distributed like vines what is a dream of every fisherman, diver and a researcher of sea depths. The sea is clean, dark green. The inlet winds are convenient for sailing.<\/a><\/p>\n

History of Ulcinj:<\/strong>\"kalaja<\/a>
\n The town is believed to be founded in the 5th century BC by Greek colonists from Colchis. The Colchian colonization is mentioned in the 3rd century BC, in a poem by Apollonius of Rhodos.<\/a>

\n The wider area of Ulcinj start to populated in the Bronze Age. Illyrian tombs (tumuli), found in the village of Zogaj, in the vicinity of Ulcinj, are going back to the Bronze Age.<\/a>
\n llyrians used to live in the region in that time, and under Greek influence they built incredible huge \u201cCyclopean Walls\u201d. In Latin language, it was known as Olcinium or Ulcinium. In medieval times a shipwreck of a Saracen sailing boat beached there with African slaves. Some locals from Ulcinj saved the Africans and integrated the slaves into their community.<\/a><\/p>\n

Churches, Monasteries, Mosque<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

Ulcinj as a city of three religion and with such an long and rich history is full with cultural and historical monuments, such of them in devastating stages but still very significant for telling about the richness of Ulcinj as an pearl of Adriatic.<\/a><\/p>\n

Church \u2013 Mosque<\/strong> a beautiful bulding located in the center of today Museum complex of Ulcinj. It encompasses a period between XIV and XVI century. In the space of that ancient building, the church of St Marija, which was built in 1510, is situated. On the west side of the church well preserved is an original church wall. In its base the church has an irregular rectangle, with one entrance. In the church a portal with renaissance doorjamb is kept. Above the door of the church there is an archivolt.<\/a><\/p>\n

After the conquering by Otoman Perandory in 1693, the church was turned into a city mosque. The oculist of the church is immured, 4 new windows were made, sidewalls were rebuilt, and a minaret was added onto the building.<\/a><\/p>\n

Watch Tower<\/strong> \u2013 very high building located in the center of today and that time city of Ulcinj. Very high building with very regular and linear building made by irregular shaped stones.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Church of St. Josef<\/strong> \u2013 is situated under White hill (Bjela Gora, Mali i Bardh). It was built in 1875 as a church with 3 belfries and one transept. The church of St. Josef \u2013 Josip, is the last object built in the area of Ulcinj, what is very interested, in the time of Otoman reign.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Church of St. Vasilije<\/strong> \u2013 is placed on a location near Ulcinj, called Zoganj. The church of St. Vasilije is an orthodox temple built at the end of the XVIII century. The church is rich with traditional ornaments.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Church of St. George<\/strong> \u2013 is aN catholic church, which is located close to the mouth of the River Bojana, in small village called Shen Gjergj \u2013 Sveti Djordje. According to written records, the church of St. Georg originates from the XIX century<\/a><\/p>\n

The Church of Bratica<\/strong> \u2013 is situated in the same named place. The church Bratica is a catholic temple, built at the beginning of the XX century.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Church in Lower Klezna<\/strong> \u2013 is located in a place called Lower Klezna, several kilometers away from Ulcinj. The church is the property of the catholic archbishopric, and it was built in XIX century.<\/a><\/p>\n

Ortxodox Catherdral of St. Nikola<\/strong> \u2013 is situated in a place in Ulcinj called Meterizi. Even though it was built in 1890, according to historical data, in its place, in the XV century there was already an orthodox monastery dedicated to St. Archangel Mihailo.<\/a><\/p>\n

St. Joan\u2019s Church<\/strong> \u2013 is located near Svac dead city, a former town. Church was built in 1300 as a cathedral church. That temple is located on the grounds of a much older church, which the Mongolians ruined a long time ago, when they destroyed the whol city of Shas.<\/a><\/p>\n

Franciskan Church of St. Marija<\/strong> \u2013 is situated in a place called Svac. Among 8 churches which can be recognized, from 365 churched that have been in the area of Svac. That is a temple, which according to some data, was built most probably after the year 1300.<\/a><\/p>\n

Pasha`s Mosque<\/strong> \u2013 is situated in the very Ulcinj, under the walls of 2.5 Millenniums old Old Town of Ulcinj. That building originates from the Turkish period. Pasha`s mosque was built in 1719, and it is endowment of Klic Alija from Constantinople (Istanbul). Next to the mosque there is a Turkish bath, the only object of that kind in the entire Montenegro. The Turkish bath is consisted of one extra object and a bath.<\/a><\/p>\n

Mosque vrh pazara<\/strong> \u2013 was built in XVIII century. That temple in its basis is a rectangle mosque with an octagon minaret. Even though during the earthquake in 1979 the mosque Ne Mezgjah \u2013 Vrh pazara has been damaged a lot, on the grounds of the existing one today we a new mosque is seen.<\/a><\/p>\n

Mosque Meraja<\/strong> \u2013 represents a typical district mosque. It was built in XVII century.<\/a><\/p>\n

Mosque Ljamit<\/strong> \u2013 is situated in a place called New District. It was built in XVIII century adn reconstructed in 90\u2032s of XX century. It was built from the fractured stone and lime mortar. The mosque Ljamiz has a rectangle basis with a minaret. The earthquake that occurred in 1979 has terribly damaged that mosque.<\/a><\/p>\n

Mosque Sas<\/strong> \u2013 is located in the place, named with the same name. It is a district mosque built in the XVIII century.<\/a><\/p>\n

Mosque Rastis<\/strong> \u2013 is located in the place, named with the same name, and it represents a district mosque.<\/a><\/p>\n

Mosque Selita<\/strong> \u2013 is located in the place, named with the same name. It was built in the XVII century, but the significant changes were done in XIX and XX century.<\/a><\/p>\n

The main Mosque Namazdjah<\/strong> \u2013 is located in Ulcinj. Sulejman Mijali built that mosque in 1728. The mosque Namazdjah represents a typical district mosque with a basis rectangular form and a minaret.<\/a><\/p>\n

Mosque Draginje<\/strong> \u2013 is located in the place, named with the same name. That temple has a typically rectangular base. The mosque Draginje is a district mosque.<\/a><\/p>\n

Mosque Vladimir<\/strong> \u2013 is located in a place called Vladimir close to Ulcinj. It was built at the end of the XVIII century.<\/a><\/p>\n

Mosque Brajse<\/strong> \u2013 is located in the same named place. That is a mosque of a rectangular base, built in XVII century.<\/a><\/p>\n

Mosque Krute<\/strong> \u2013 is placed in a place called krute. It was built at the end of the XIX and the beginning of the XX century<\/a><\/p>\n

Mosque Mide<\/strong> \u2013 is located in the same named place. It was built in XVIII century.<\/a><\/p>\n

Mosque Sukobin<\/strong> \u2013 is located in a place called Sukobin. It was built in the end of the XVIII and the beginning of the XIX century.<\/a><\/p>\n

Mosque in Lower Klezna \u2013 was built at the end of the XIX and the beginning of the XX century.<\/a><\/p>\n

The picturesque walled town of Ulcinj itself is steeped in history still retaining its old world charm and has local unspoilt beaches and famous grottos all within easy walking distance.<\/a><\/p>\n
