Croatia, Montenegro and the Bulgarian Black-Sea Coast in particular, have made themselves a name as holiday destinations with beautiful beaches. Lying all day at the beach, watching the sweat dripping down your companion’s neck does have a certain appeal – but it wears off quite quickly for some of us.
‘Adventure’ holidays, or at least the occasional adventurous or at least physical activity, can be a great alternative to lazy days on the beach and the region has started to cater for the needs of those who want to be anything but bored on their holiday.

Kitesurfing/boarding

Get your wetsuit on and go Kitesurfing or Kiteboarding!
When Kitesurfing, your feet are strapped to a board and two straps attach you to the kite, making it a combination of the more classic outdoor sports, paragliding and windsurfing.
Ulcinj in Montenegro, just on the border with Albania, has the longest sandy beach in Europe which stretches 14km along the shore and the shallow waters make it the perfect spot for beginners as well as more advanced kitesurfers.
Ulcinj provides the steady onshore wind required for kitesurfing with the Mistral wind normally blowing at a speed of around 14-25 knots, everyday from around noon.
If you have never been kitesurfing, taking lessons is an absolute requirement if you are not to  endanger yourself or others while practising the sport.
If you prefer watching the acrobatics, one of the schools in Ulcinj, Kitesfera, organises kite surfing challenges every summer which attract competitors from all over the region to compete in the sport.
Five days of three hour long classes cost €330 at Kitesfera.
