Fed Cup Ulcinj: Hosts Montenegro win as pool stages are completed
Hosts Montenegro finished the pool stages with a win, while Kosovo won its first ever Fed Cup tie at the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Europe/Africa Zone Group III event in Ulcinj.
World No. 62 Danka Kovinic led Montenegro to a 2-1 victory over Morocco, winning both a singles and a doubles rubber in straight sets. But for a narrow loss to Norway earlier in the week, the host nation would have had an excellent chance of making the promotion play-offs and will no doubt look to build on its results this week in future.
In the other Pool D tie, Kosovo claimed its first ever Fed Cup win, defeating Mozambique 3-0. In the two Pool B ties today, Ireland defeated Armenia 2-1 and FYR Macedonia warmed up for the play-offs by beating Iceland 3-0.
Two ranking play-offs were also contested today, with Greece defeating Madagascar to finish in 5th place and Tunisia beating Cyprus to end the week 9th.
On Saturday, the key promotion play-offs will take place, with FYR Macedonia facing Norway and Luxembourg taking on Moldova; the winners will advance to Zone Group II next year.
